Step 1:
Clean the surface of the circlip with a cloth to remove oil and other residues from production process.
Ensure that anvil faces are clean then set the micrometer at zero using the ratchet before measurement begins.
See figure 2 for ratchets.
Step 2:
Hold micrometer in palm of hand so that ratchet can be rotated with thumb and index finger.
Holding component comfortably and in a position that the read out of the micrometer can be seen, measure the component.
See figure 1
Step 3: (Used on products blanked from strip)
Using a point micrometer or a ball micrometer position the anvils opposite to free gap, and in the middle of beam/wire section.
Anvils must be perpendicular to the surface of the circlip
Step 4: (Used on products coiled then blanked from wire)
Using a flat micrometer position the anvils opposite to free gap, and measure thickness on the functional edge of the part:
- internal edge for external circlips.
- external edge for internal circlips.
See figure 3
Notes:
Figure 4 shows three micrometer anvil types that are typically used to measure material/component thickness.
The type used to perform measurement is defined by the control plan.
